Swine Flu presentation at KEMU

 Seminar on the Swine Flu in KEMU

 

Vice chancellor Professor Zafarullah Khan organised a CME seminar on “Swine Flu – Treatment and Prevention” on 23rd December 2009 in the auditorium of the KEMU.   Dr Muhammad Abid from KEMCA UK was invited as keynote speaker for this seminar.   The panel consisted of Professor Zafarullah Khan, Professor Mahmood Shuakat, Registrar, Dr Zahid Pervaiz Medical Superintendent Mayo Hospital and guests from the Department of Health of Punjab Government.   This seminar was part of training programmes to raise the awareness among health care professionals about the swine flu and it management.  

The seminar was attended by more than 500 health care workers including professors from different faculties, junior doctors, medical students and nursing staff.   Dr Abid described the origin of swine flu, its epidemiology and how it has spread to all five continents.  He shared his experience that how this pandemic was being managed in the UK and what lessons have been learnt so far which included managing individual cases in the community and in the hospitals.   He described in detail the development of diagnostic tools for swine flu and the preventive interventions which included early detection, importance of social distancing and personal hygiene and implementation of swine flu vaccination programme. 

Following his lecture, the discussion included that how the Government of Punjab and local health care facilities are implementing the system to cope with the burden of this pandemic.   In the end Dr Abid was thanked by the vice chancellor and participants to share his knowledge and experience of this novel infection.

 

Dr Abid attended the academic council meeting following this seminar to discuss the planning of the 150th celebrations of the KEMU which was held in the vice chancellors office.  This meeting was chaired by VC Professor Zafarullah Khan and attended by a delegate from the KEMCAANA (Dr Hassan Bukhari, Dr Arif Toor, Dr Arif Agha),  Professor Eice Muhammad, Professor Mahmood Shaukat – Registrar, Dr Zahid Pervaiz and others.  A programme was agreed that how these celebrations will run throughout the year.
